He was born on September 18, 1918, in the village of Teplovka, which is now in the Volsky District of the Saratov Region. After graduating from the Federal Vocational School, he worked at the Moscow Meat Processing Plant while also studying at an aeroclub. He later graduated from the Borisoglebsk Military Aviation School for Pilots. He participated in the Soviet-Finnish War of 1939-1940. He made 47 combat flights and shot down four Finnish aircraft, for which he was awarded the Order of the Red Star (1940).
He fought in the Great Patriotic War since June 1941. He made more than 60 combat sorties. In the summer and autumn of 1941, he fought near Moscow.
