AKKURATOV Fedor Yakovlevich
Born in the village of Cheremisino (defunct since 1979), part of the Kineshemsky District. He attended the Ilyinskaya rural school, then the eight-year school No. 11 in Kineshma, where he moved with his parents. After graduating, he worked as a watchmaker in the workshop of the "Precise Time" artel. He joined the army in 1936 and, at his own request, was sent to aviation. He graduated from the school of junior aviation specialists. He served as an aerial gunner-radio operator in a bomber regiment near Leningrad. After completing his compulsory service, he remained for extended service, preparing to enter aviation school. He participated in the war with Finland from 1939 to 1940. He completed 44 combat sorties in an SB (ANT-40) bomber. He flew in the crew of the squadron commissar, senior political instructor Koinash. He received several commendations from the command for the excellent performance of missions. During one combat mission, when our aircraft were attacked by Finnish fighters, he took the initiative and organized a joint defense against enemy attacks with the gunners of other bombers. As a result of the battle, two fighters were shot down, and a third retired. On March 1, 1940, while on a combat mission to destroy enemy fire positions near Vyborg, Sergeant Major Akkuratov's plane was hit by anti-aircraft fire and caught fire. The pilot managed to land the damaged aircraft on the ice of a lake in enemy territory near the village of Kyakheri, three kilometers from our positions. The crew fought back against the encircling enemy. From the award sheet: "Comrade Akkuratov, along with navigator Comrade Kornilov, under the leadership of Commissar Comrade Koinash, courageously fought off the brutal White Finnish gangs that were pressing in on them, firing a machine gun and pistol. At the last moment, despite the frenzied machine-gun fire of the brutal White Finns, Comrade Akkuratov rushed to reconnoitre his troops, to rescue his comrades, and to rescue the aircraft, fulfilling his duty as a Red Army soldier. But after running 150-200 meters, he was brutally machine-gunned by the White Finns. He is buried in a mass grave in the cemetery of Sestroretsk (now within the city limits of St. Petersburg).
